THE UNIVERSITIES (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2012
EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM
This Act seeks to amend the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993 by limiting the tenure of Principal officers to a single term of five years, increase the retiring age of academic staff in the Professional cadre and non-academic staff in the Universities.
THE UNIVERSITIES (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) (AMENDMENT) ACT
An Act to further amend The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1993 to increase the retirement age for academic staff in the professorial cadre and non academic staff and other matters connected therewith

BE IT ENACTED by the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as follows:
Amendment of No. 11 of 1993
Amendment of Section 5
“(3) A Registrar shall hold office for a single term of five years only beginning from the effective date of his appointment and on such terms and conditions as may be specified in his letter of appointment; and
(4) Notwithstanding Subsection (3) of this Section, the Council may, upon satisfactory performance, extend the tenure of the Registrar for a further period of one year only and thereafter such Registrar shall relinquish his post and be assigned to other duties in the University”.
Amendment of Section 6
“(4) A Bursar or Librarian shall hold office for a single term of five years only beginning from the effective date of his appointment and on such terms and conditions as may be specified in his letter of appointment; and
(5) Notwithstanding Sub-Section (4) of this Section, the Council may, upon satisfactory performance, extend the tenure of the Bursar or Librarian for a further period of one year only and thereafter such Bursar or Librarian shall relinquish his post and be assigned to other duties in the University.
Amendment of Section 8
“(8) As from the commencement of this Act, the compulsory retiring age for-
(a) academic staff in the Professorial cadre is 70 years; and
(b) non-Academic staff is 65 years”.
