RIVER NIGER TRANSIT ACT

An Act to make provision for the passing of vessels and of goods in transit between the sea and places beyond Nigeria, via the River Niger or in the case of goods partly via the River Niger and partly by land.

 

[7th August, 1924]      [Commencement.]

 

  1. 1. Right of vessels and goods to pass through Nigeria in transit via the River Niger 

Vessels and goods may pass in transit between the sea and places beyond Nigeria via the River Niger or, in the case of goods, partly via the River Niger and partly by land, subject to such regulations as may for the time being be in force under this Act.

  1. Power to make regulations

The Minister may make regulations prescribing the conditions under which vessels and goods may pass in transit between the sea and places beyond Nigeria via the River Niger or, in the case of goods, partly via the River Niger and partly by land, and may impose a penalty not exceeding a fine of four hundred naira or imprisonment for a term of six months or both for any breach of such regulations.

  1. Interpretation

In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires-

“Minister” means the Minister charged with responsibility for Transport;

“River Niger” includes the River Niger and all its effluents, branches and outlets
within Nigeria.

  1. Short title

This Act may be cited as the River Niger Transit Act.
