TREATIES OF NIGERIA (MULTILATERALS)

Nigeria’s International multilateral or multinational treaties loosely refer to treaties and conventions signed, acceded to or ratified by Nigeria along with, at least, two other sovereign nations. Properly, under the Nigerian Constitution, a treaty becomes binding on Nigeria when it is ratified by the National Assembly of Nigeria and – where the treaty’s subject matter includes matters on the Concurrent List of the Constitution – the prescribed majority of the State Houses of Assembly.

Most treaties, in practice, are negotiated or brokered by multilateral organisations or platforms like the United Nation (global) or African Union or ECOWAS (for continent-wide or regional treaties or conventions). International nongovernmental organisations have over the years become a major catalyst and facilitator of global multilateral agreements especially in the areas of human rights, children and women matters, environment and natural resources.

Other international Organisations dealing with specific issues of international concern like OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries), WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation), IOC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation), etc. also develop cross-continental multilateral treaties.
